The Palau de la Música Catalana
Palau de la Música Catalana, located in the center of Barcelona, is one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world. The concert hall and music palace was designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the architects who laid the foundations of Catalan Modernism (“Jugendstil”).
Construction of the Palau de la Música began in 1905, and the concert building was completed in 1908. The project was initially financed by public subscription, but significant financial contributions were also made by wealthy industrialists and members of Barcelona’s bourgeoisie.
In 1997, the Catalan music palace was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the Hospital de Sant Pau.
Today, more than half a million people attend musical performances at the concert hall each year, ranging from symphonic music, opera, and chamber music to flamenco, jazz, and Cançó (the Catalan song tradition).
